Hydrotherapy is the treatment of animals in water. Animals can be exercised without having to fully weight bear on injured areas and can aid in recovery times. It also helps to keep pets fit and provides mental enrichment.
The benefits of hydrotherapy treatment can include:
increased blood circulation which eases muscle stiffness and pain
anti-inflammatory effects due to the pressure of the water
builds muscle mass and strength from the water resistance
aid in post-op recovery times
improve quality of life and metal wellbeing and release endorphins
The patient's time in the water may vary as hydrotherapy treatement can be more cardiovasculalry- demanding for your pet. Inital sessions may start shorter and length of treatment may increase with further consults.
Underwater Treadmill
Our state of the art underwater treadmill can be adapted so that it is tailored to each pet’s specific needs in order to create a unique rehabilitation programme. The water level, speed of the treadmill and incline can be altered so that your pet’s needs are being met as part of their treatment plan. The water is treated with sanitisers and tested regularly to ensure it is safe for all patients and is heated to 30-32 degrees which can aid with inflammation of joints. The properties of the water, including buoyancy, density, hydrostatic pressure and viscosity can be used to work with the patient to promote increased joint range of motion, reducing inflammation and provide analgesia.
With my knowledge and experience of being a Registered Veterinary Nurse and canine hydrotherapist, various hydrotherapy techniques can be used in order to achieve the patient’s goals. The treadmill allows for patients to walk in and so reduces the risk of water aversion. The sides are clear glass which gives the hydrotherapist the ability to see gait patterning and adapt as necessary. This also gives the pet the ability to see the owner which can keep them at ease and calm any nerves.
Spa
The spa can be used following treadmill treatment which can help to relieve tight muscles. This can be beneficial for patients with joint disease such as arthritis. The warm water and jets help to improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation.
